Dear Delawareans and Elected Officials,
Our state stands at a crossroads. The $635 million Edgemoor Port project promises to transform Delaware’s maritime future, but at what cost? As taxpayers, neighbors, and stewards of our communities, we must ask: Is this new terminal worth the financial strain, environmental risks, and disruptions it brings? Or is there a better path forward—one that builds on the strength of our existing Port of Wilmington?
The Port of Wilmington is Delaware’s economic heartbeat, connecting our small businesses, workers, and families to global trade. Yet, it faces capacity limits that could be addressed with smart upgrades: modernized docks, advanced cranes, and streamlined technology. These improvements could boost cargo handling at a fraction of Edgemoor’s price tag, without uprooting our communities or gambling with our budget.
Consider the numbers. Edgemoor demands $195 million from Delaware taxpayers—31% of its total cost—plus a $200 million transfer to the Diamond State Port Corporation now under state audit for transparency. Legal setbacks, like the October 2024 federal ruling and April 2025 state court decision revoking permits, signal this project is mired in risks. From potential traffic gridlock to a Delaware River bottleneck threatening regional ports, Edgemoor’s challenges outweigh its promises. Worse, its location on a former chemical plant raises environmental red flags that our state cannot ignore.
Then there’s the question of trust. Political disputes over the DSPC board, including controversial nominations and a Delaware Supreme Court review, suggest conflicts of interest that erode public confidence. Why push forward with a project shrouded in doubt when we have a proven alternative?
Upgrading the Port of Wilmington is not just practical—it’s personal. This port is part of our history, our identity. It’s where our neighbors work, where our businesses thrive. Modernizing it preserves community ties, minimizes disruption, and avoids the legal and financial pitfalls of Edgemoor. It’s a solution that respects our past while securing our future.
We urge Gov. Matt Meyer, our legislators, and every Delawarean to act. Redirect funds to the Port of Wilmington. Demand transparency in how our money is spent. Support a vision that strengthens what we already have, not one that risks what we hold dear. Together, we can protect our state’s economy, environment, and communities.
